How we research and compare financial products

A comparison starts with the decision you are making, then with the details that change that decision. A number is published only when it has a source and a date.

Updated 30 October 2026.

The providers on a page are the ones researched for that category. The list is not the whole South African market. A firm that is missing is not being judged unsuitable.

Tables on banking, loans, savings, investments, insurance and business-finance pages are sorted by provider name, then by product name when a provider has more than one product. They are not ranked from best to worst.

Product research

We use the provider's own website, fee guide, policy wording or product document, and official material from SARS, the Reserve Bank, the Prudential Authority, the FSCA, the National Credit Regulator, the Council for Medical Schemes, National Treasury, CIPC and the Financial Intelligence Centre where the topic needs them. A date on a page is the day the information was checked. It is not a promise that the provider has not changed the product since.

Provider selection

A name is included because people are likely to look it up, or because it belongs to the category being compared. Inclusion is not a partnership, a licence check or a recommendation. If a registration number has not been checked on the regulator's register, the profile does not present that number as verified.

How products are grouped

Products are grouped by the job they do. A personal loan is not a home loan, a medical scheme is not gap cover, a unit trust is not a bank deposit, and a merchant cash advance is not priced as an annual percentage rate. The same details are used inside a category so two products can be read together. They are not combined into one score.

Pricing

A published rate needs a source and a date. A 'from' rate is not the rate you will be offered. Insurance premiums and credit rates that depend on underwriting or an affordability assessment are not invented. VAT is explained on pages about VAT. It is not assumed on every fee. A charge that has not been checked is left off the page. A zero you type into a calculator is labelled as a figure you entered.

Sorting and sponsored placements

Filters narrow the products in a category. They do not score them. The order is the provider's name. A missing price is left blank. It is not filled in as zero so that a product looks cheapest. If a provider later pays for a placement, that row will be labelled Sponsored and kept separate from this order. No comparison on the site uses an editorial score.

Checks and updates

Tax brackets, rebates, medical scheme credits, VAT thresholds and retirement deduction caps used in the calculators are for the 2027 year of assessment, checked on 28 October 2026. Each guide keeps its own review date. If a figure cannot be checked again, the page says so and does not print a guess.

Limitations

Terms change. Not every provider is listed. A comparison is general information. It is not personal advice under the FAIS Act, and it is not a credit quotation under the National Credit Act. Check the current document with the provider before you act.
