How to read this comparison
Gap cover is short-term insurance for specified shortfalls and co-payments. It usually requires you to belong to a medical scheme. An annual limit, a waiting period and an age limit can apply. It does not pay every specialist charge above the scheme rate.
The insurer of the gap policy is not the medical scheme. A claim still has to match the insured event in the policy wording.
Specialists in private hospitals sometimes charge more than the scheme rate. The difference is the gap. Gap cover is an insurance policy designed to pay some of those shortfalls, within limits, if you already belong to a medical scheme.
It does not replace a scheme. It usually will not take you if you are not a scheme member, and it does not cover prescribed minimum benefits as a scheme does. Treat any advert that blurs the two as a reason to read the policy schedule twice.
How the cover works
The shortfall
The scheme pays its rate. The specialist charges more. The policy pays the difference up to its limit, if the event is covered and the waiting period is over.
Limits
Policies cap the shortfall at a multiple of the scheme rate, or at a rand amount a year. Co-payments and penalties for not using a network are not always included.
Waiting periods
New policies often exclude existing conditions for a period. Switching gap policies can restart that clock.
What to check
Overall limit
The annual rand cap.
What shortfalls
In-hospital specialists, co-payments, casualty, cancer, or a narrower list.
Scheme membership
Whether you must belong to a scheme, which you almost always must.
Exclusions
Cosmetic care, waiting periods and penalties.
Risks
- Thinking gap cover is medical aid and cancelling the scheme.
- A limit that is too low for the specialist you actually use.
- A waiting period during the year you needed the policy.
Claims and complaints
Report a claim to the insurer, scheme or administrator named on your documents, in the way the policy or scheme rules describe. WiT Money does not decide the claim. If you have complained to that organisation and you are still not satisfied, the National Financial Ombud Scheme handles certain financial complaints, and the Council for Medical Schemes handles medical scheme complaints. Take the policy schedule, the rejection letter and the claim documents with you.
How WiT Money compares these products
Products stay in provider name order. A car excess, a funeral benefit, a medical scheme contribution and a pet plan are not sorted against one another. Nothing is ranked as the cheapest. A listed name is not a recommendation, and WiT Money does not sell the policy. Where this site has the provider's logo, it is shown. Otherwise the name is shown without a mark. An FSP number or a scheme registration number is not printed unless the recorded page already states it, and it is not a register check by WiT Money.
Questions readers ask
Can I buy gap cover instead of medical aid?
No. Gap cover responds to a shortfall on a scheme payment. Without a scheme there is usually nothing for it to top up, and you do not have prescribed minimum benefits.
Does it pay the whole specialist bill?
It pays the covered shortfall up to its limit. A charge above the limit, or an excluded item, remains yours.
Is the insurer the medical scheme?
No. The insurer is an insurance company. The scheme is a separate registered entity.
