Compare Medical Aid Schemes in South Africa
A medical scheme is not an ordinary short-term insurance policy. The scheme, the option and the administrator are different roles.
Premiums, excesses, contributions and cover depend on your circumstances and the policy or scheme rules. Confirm the final terms before you buy. Information checked 29 October 2026.

The provider name links to the WiT Money profile where one exists. The gold button opens the recorded website. It is not a quote and not an application.

How to read this comparison
Prescribed Minimum Benefits are a Medical Schemes Act concept. A scheme can require a Designated Service Provider, pre-authorisation and a waiting period. A late-joiner penalty can apply. Contributions depend on the option, income band and who is on the membership. This page does not calculate a contribution from an incomplete table.
Discovery Health Medical Scheme is not the same entity as Discovery Health (Pty) Ltd, the administrator, or as Discovery Insure. An FSCA registration is not proof that a medical scheme is registered with the Council for Medical Schemes.
Medical aid, in ordinary speech, means membership of a medical scheme. A scheme is a not-for-profit entity registered under the Medical Schemes Act and supervised by the Council for Medical Schemes. It is not the same legal thing as a health-insurance policy sold by an insurer, and it is not gap cover.
The scheme and the administrator are also different. Discovery Health Medical Scheme is a scheme. Discovery Health (Pty) Ltd is an administrator. People mix the names up. When you join, you join a scheme and an option. A starting contribution below, where one is shown, is the figure checked on 29 October 2026 for the basis named on the card. It is not your contribution, and it is not a Council for Medical Schemes register check.
How the cover works
Options
A scheme offers benefit options. Hospital options pay for in-hospital care and little day-to-day care. Comprehensive options add day-to-day benefits, often through a savings account and an above-threshold benefit. Savings are your own contribution sitting in a pocket. When it is empty, day-to-day claims are yours until any threshold is reached.
Prescribed minimum benefits
Schemes must pay for prescribed minimum benefits, a set of emergency, chronic and hospital conditions, under the rules and the designated providers. PMBs are not a promise that every private specialist and every room is paid in full.
Waiting periods and late joiner penalties
Schemes can apply waiting periods and, for people who join late in life without previous cover, a late-joiner penalty. These are legal features of the system. Do not cancel a scheme you have belonged to for years without understanding what you restart.
What to check
Scheme and option
The registered scheme and the exact option name.
Contribution
By income band or by member mix, from the current contribution table, dated.
Hospital and chronic benefits
What is paid, and at which hospitals and providers.
Day-to-day
Savings, limits and what happens when savings run out.
CMS registration
Confirmed on the Council for Medical Schemes register, not assumed from an advert.
Risks
- Choosing an option you cannot fund in January when savings are empty.
- Confusing the administrator's brand with the scheme's rules.
- Leaving a scheme and discovering a waiting period on the way back.
- Assuming a hospital plan pays GP visits. It usually does not, except where PMBs require it.
Claims and complaints
Report a claim to the insurer, scheme or administrator named on your documents, in the way the policy or scheme rules describe. WiT Money does not decide the claim. If you have complained to that organisation and you are still not satisfied, the National Financial Ombud Scheme handles certain financial complaints, and the Council for Medical Schemes handles medical scheme complaints. Take the policy schedule, the rejection letter and the claim documents with you.
How WiT Money compares these products
Products stay in provider name order. A car excess, a funeral benefit, a medical scheme contribution and a pet plan are not sorted against one another. Nothing is ranked as the cheapest. A listed name is not a recommendation, and WiT Money does not sell the policy. Where this site has the provider's logo, it is shown. Otherwise the name is shown without a mark. An FSP number or a scheme registration number is not printed unless the recorded page already states it, and it is not a register check by WiT Money.
Questions readers ask
Is medical aid the same as medical insurance?
No. A medical scheme is registered with the Council for Medical Schemes and covers prescribed minimum benefits. A health-insurance policy is an insurance contract with benefit limits and is not a medical scheme. Gap cover is a third product, aimed at shortfalls, and it usually requires you to belong to a scheme.
What is a medical savings account?
It is part of your contribution, set aside for day-to-day claims. It is not a bonus. When it is finished, you pay those claims yourself unless an above-threshold benefit applies.
Can you tell me which option to join?
No. That is advice, and medical-scheme advice has its own accreditation rules. Use the scheme rules and, if you want a recommendation, an accredited broker.
