Car insurance and home insurance
Comprehensive car cover and third-party cover do different jobs. Buildings insurance and home contents insurance do too. Underinsurance cuts the claim.

Key points
- Third-party cover does not repair your own car.
- Buildings and contents are separate sums insured.
- SASRIA is a separate policy for special risks. Do not assume it is included.
Comprehensive cover is designed to pay for damage to your car as well as your liability to other people, subject to the excess and the exclusions. Third-party cover is the liability part. It does not put your own car back on the road. Third-party, fire and theft sits between them. Read which one the schedule says you bought.
Home insurance splits the building from the contents. The building sum should track the cost of rebuilding, not the price you hope to sell for. Contents are replacement values. If you insure for less than the real value, the average clause in many policies reduces the claim even on a partial loss. That is underinsurance. It is a common and expensive mistake.
After a crash
See to injuries first. Report the accident to the police when the law or the policy requires it, and to the insurer within the time the policy states. Do not admit fault in a way the policy forbids. Photograph the scene if you can do it safely. The insurer's approval still depends on the policy.
SASRIA
SASRIA SOC Ltd insures special risks such as riots and strikes, on its own wording. A motor or household policy does not automatically include it. The research on this site does not mark SASRIA as included unless the file says so. Ask for the SASRIA coupon if you think you have it.
Questions readers ask
Does the bank's home loan include household contents?
The bank may require buildings cover for the bond. Contents are your own policy unless a schedule says otherwise.
