Credit scores in South Africa: the essentials
What is a credit score?
A number produced from credit information by one scoring model.
Read the sectionIs there one South African credit score?
No. Bureaux and lenders can use different models and different scales.
Read the sectionCan I check my credit report for free?
Section 72 of the National Credit Act provides one free inspection in any 12-month period, and another after a successful challenge.
Read the sectionDoes a good score guarantee a loan?
No. A lender also looks at income, expenses, existing credit and its own rules.
Read the sectionHow credit scores work
Stage 1
Credit information is reported
Credit providers and other authorised parties submit account and payment information. Who reports, and how often, is not the same at every bureau.
Stage 2
A credit bureau compiles a report
The bureau keeps the history it is allowed to keep. Two bureaux can hold different accounts for the same person.
Stage 3
A scoring model produces a number
The number depends on that model and on the information it can see. It is not a national score, and it is not the lender’s affordability assessment.
A credit score is not the same as a lender’s affordability assessment. The lender may also look at income, living costs and the agreements you already have.
Where to check a credit report
The NCR register page reported 55 registered credit bureaux on 28 October 2026. These three are the consumer names people most often meet. WiT Money does not issue reports and does not rank the bureaux.
Prices and monitoring products are incomplete, so there is no fee filter and no sort. A blank price is not R0.

TransUnion
Credit bureau
TransUnion Credit Bureau (Pty) Ltd
The NCR credit bureau register page showed registration NCRCB4 on 28 October 2026.
- Free report
- Section 72 of the National Credit Act gives one free inspection in any 12-month period, and another after a successful challenge so you can check the correction. A further report may be charged.
- Paid services
- No rand price is published on this page.
- Score
- TransUnion’s own consumer pages describe a score that can run up to 999. Those pages do not agree on the band cut-offs, so this page does not label a number good or poor.
- Monitoring
- Not confirmed on this page.
- Contact listed on the NCR register
- The NCR register lists 086 148 2435. A named staff email on the register is not repeated here.

A separate consumer-report login was not confirmed in this check. Use the request route on TransUnion’s own site.
South African consumer site. The NCR register lists www.transunion.com.

Experian
Credit bureau
Experian South Africa (Pty) Ltd
The NCR credit bureau register page showed registration NCRCB16 on 28 October 2026. An older Experian Bureau (Pty) Ltd registration, NCRCB3, is on the NCR’s voluntarily cancelled list.
- Free report
- The same section 72 free-inspection right applies. It is not the same thing as a paid monitoring subscription.
- Paid services
- No rand price is published on this page.
- Score
- No Experian score scale was confirmed for this page. Do not reuse another bureau’s bands.
- Monitoring
- Not confirmed on this page.
- Contact listed on the NCR register
- The NCR register lists 086 110 5665 and EZA.consumer@experian.com.
NCR register, including the cancelled-bureau list, checked 28 October 2026.
The register lists www.experian.co.za as the credit-report website. A separate report-login path was not confirmed.
The address shown on the NCR register. The site blocked an automated read, so product claims are not taken from it.

XDS
Credit bureau
Xpert Decision Systems (Pty) Ltd
The NCR credit bureau register page showed registration NCRCB5, trading as XDS, on 28 October 2026.
- Free report
- Section 72 still gives the statutory free inspection. XDS also points consumers to Splendi.
- Paid services
- No rand price is published on this page.
- Score
- No XDS score scale was confirmed. A Splendi score is not a TransUnion score.
- Monitoring
- Not confirmed on this page.
- Contact listed on the NCR register
- The NCR register lists 011 645 9100. A named staff email on the register is not repeated here.
NCR register and xds.co.za, checked 28 October 2026.
Official XDS site, read on 28 October 2026. The NCR register still lists www.zenaptix.com, which is not used as the consumer link.
Compuscan is not shown as its own card. It did not appear as a separate live consumer bureau in the register pages read on this date. The cancelled list shows the older Experian Bureau (Pty) Ltd registration was closed because Experian South Africa (Pty) Ltd is the registered entity.
What is a good credit score in South Africa?
There is no universal range. TransUnion’s consumer material, checked on 28 October 2026, describes a score that can run up to 999. Its own pages then publish different band tables, so this site will not pick one and call it current. Experian and XDS are not given TransUnion’s scale.
Why a good credit score does not guarantee approval
Credit report
The accounts, limits, payments, enquiries and lawful public information.
Credit score
One model’s number, built from some of that information.
Income and expenses
Payslips or statements, and the cost of living, not only the expenses a form asks for.
Existing commitments
Debit orders and agreements you already have to pay.
Affordability assessment
The National Credit Act requires a real look at whether the repayment fits.
The lender’s own rules
A personal loan, a home loan, vehicle finance, a credit card and a store account are not decided on the same score.
Ways to improve your credit health
- Pay agreements on the due date.
- Keep the instalments you already have inside what you can live on.
- Read the report for accounts you do not recognise.
- Challenge incorrect entries with evidence.
- Do not make a run of applications to test a score.
- If a limit is high relative to what you owe, that usage can matter to a model. The weight is not published here.
- Keep your name, ID number and address accurate.
- Deal with arrears through the credit provider. Ignoring them does not age them off on demand.
- Debt review is a legal process for over-indebtedness. It is not a score trick, and it restricts new credit.
- Do not pay an upfront fee to a person who promises to wipe a report or raise a score by a set date.
Opening a new account is not required to build a record, and borrowing in order to chase a number is a poor reason to take credit. No score increase is promised.
Risks, fraud and your rights
- Credit-repair adverts that promise deletion or a guaranteed higher score.
- Anyone who wants a fee before they have done anything, or who asks for your internet-banking login.
- A site that imitates a bureau. Use the official address on this page or the NCR register.
- Phishing messages about a report, a judgment or a refund.
- Accounts or enquiries you do not recognise. Treat those as possible identity theft and dispute them.
- Guaranteed-approval claims. A score is not an approval.
Report a credit-information complaint through the NCR after you have used the bureau’s dispute process. Privacy complaints about personal information can go to the Information Regulator. The dispute timing is explained on the credit reports page. NCR credible-evidence guideline, December 2025.
How this page was researched
Registration lines were read from the NCR credit bureau register on 28 October 2026. Score wording was read from TransUnion’s own consumer pages on the same day, and left without a band because the pages conflict. Prices that were not read are omitted. WiT Money is a publisher. It is not a credit bureau, a credit provider or a debt counsellor, and it is not endorsed by the NCR. Corrections can be sent via the contact page.

Questions readers ask
What is a good credit score in South Africa?
There is no national cut-off. TransUnion’s consumer pages describe a scale that can run up to 999, and those pages do not agree on the bands. Another bureau can use a different scale. A lender can ignore the consumer score and use its own model plus an affordability assessment.
Is there one free credit report a year?
Section 72 of the National Credit Act gives you a free inspection of your file once in any 12-month period, and another free inspection after a successful challenge so you can see the correction. A bureau may charge for other requests. A monitoring subscription is optional.
Does checking my own report lower the score?
Your own inspection is not a credit application. A lender’s application can be recorded as an enquiry. Do not apply for several loans just to see what a score does.
Can accurate arrears be deleted on request?
No. A dispute is for information that is wrong, incomplete or not lawfully kept. Genuine adverse information is not removed because you ask. WiT Money does not offer credit repair.
What does blacklisted mean?
It is a colloquial way of saying a report has adverse information. It is not an official status that every bureau and lender uses.
