How to read this comparison
A hospital cash plan, a GP visit benefit and an accident benefit are defined insurance benefits with limits. They are not a medical scheme option and they do not automatically include Prescribed Minimum Benefits.
Waiting periods and exclusions for pre-existing conditions are common. Read the benefit table before treating a monthly premium as full hospital cover.
Health insurance, sometimes sold as hospital cash or primary-care cover, is a contract with an insurer. It pays the benefits listed, up to the amounts listed. It can be useful and it can be mistaken for medical aid. It is not a medical scheme, it is not supervised by the Council for Medical Schemes as a scheme, and it does not have to pay prescribed minimum benefits.
If a salesperson says the policy is 'the same as medical aid' or 'CMS approved medical aid', stop. Schemes are registered with the CMS. Policies are authorised insurance products. The names are not interchangeable.
How the cover works
Stated benefits
A policy might pay a rand amount per day in hospital, a GP visit benefit, or a casualty benefit. When the cap is reached, payment stops. Private hospital bills can exceed a daily cash benefit on the first day.
Underwriting
Insurers can decline you or exclude conditions. Schemes work under different acceptance rules. This is one of the practical differences.
Who it is for
Some households use a policy because they cannot pay a scheme contribution. That is a real constraint. It does not turn the policy into hospital cover at scheme rates. Know the rand cap.
What to check
Benefit caps
The maximum for a hospital stay, a procedure or a year.
Waiting periods
Especially for existing conditions and pregnancy.
Networks
Which doctors you must use.
The insurer
The legal entity and its FSCA status, once checked.
Risks
- A hospital bill many times the daily benefit.
- Being told it replaces a scheme.
- Exclusions that cover the illness you were worried about.
Claims and complaints
Report a claim to the insurer, scheme or administrator named on your documents, in the way the policy or scheme rules describe. WiT Money does not decide the claim. If you have complained to that organisation and you are still not satisfied, the National Financial Ombud Scheme handles certain financial complaints, and the Council for Medical Schemes handles medical scheme complaints. Take the policy schedule, the rejection letter and the claim documents with you.
How WiT Money compares these products
Products stay in provider name order. A car excess, a funeral benefit, a medical scheme contribution and a pet plan are not sorted against one another. Nothing is ranked as the cheapest. A listed name is not a recommendation, and WiT Money does not sell the policy. Where this site has the provider's logo, it is shown. Otherwise the name is shown without a mark. An FSP number or a scheme registration number is not printed unless the recorded page already states it, and it is not a register check by WiT Money.
Questions readers ask
Is health insurance regulated?
Insurance policies are regulated as insurance, including FSCA requirements. They are not medical schemes and the CMS is not their registrar. Check the status of the insurer rather than the brochure.
Will it pay a private hospital in full?
Assume it will not, unless the schedule says so in rand that match hospital prices. Daily cash benefits rarely do.
Can I claim on both a scheme and a policy?
Only if each contract allows it. You cannot be paid twice for the same loss beyond the rules of the contracts. Disclose both.
