Compare Pet Insurance Providers in South Africa
Pet insurance can pay towards veterinary treatment for an accident or an illness. It does not pay every vet bill, and a wellness plan is a different product.
Premiums, excesses, contributions and cover depend on your circumstances and the policy or scheme rules. Confirm the final terms before you buy. Information checked 29 October 2026.

Type the amounts you want to test. The result uses those amounts only. It does not fetch a quote, and it does not decide a claim.
How to read this comparison
Accident-only, illness and hospital-focused plans are different. A comprehensive label on one brand is not the same list of benefits as another brand. Annual limits, per-condition limits, a percentage excess and a waiting period can all apply.
Pre-existing conditions, some breeds, routine vaccination and dental care are often excluded or sold as a separate wellness benefit. A published premium is for the pet and plan named in that line. It is not a quote for every dog or cat.
Vet treatment can cost more than a household expects, especially emergency surgery. Pet insurance pays a portion of eligible vet bills up to an annual limit, after an excess, for the conditions the policy includes.
It will not pay for a condition the animal already had, and it often will not pay for routine care unless you bought that add-on. The limit is the number that matters.
How the cover works
The claim
You pay the vet, or the insurer pays the vet, depending on the policy. You submit notes. Waiting periods apply at the start, longer for some orthopaedic conditions.
Limits
There may be a per-condition limit and an annual limit. A chronic illness can reach the cap.
Age
New cover is often refused for older animals, and premiums rise with age.
What to check
Annual limit
The most the policy will pay.
Excess and percentage
What share of each bill you still pay.
Waiting periods
Accidents versus illness.
Excluded conditions
Hereditary conditions, dental care and breeding are common exclusions.
Risks
- A limit below the cost of one surgery.
- A pre-existing condition excluded.
- Assuming it works like a medical scheme. It does not.
Claims and complaints
Report a claim to the insurer, scheme or administrator named on your documents, in the way the policy or scheme rules describe. WiT Money does not decide the claim. If you have complained to that organisation and you are still not satisfied, the National Financial Ombud Scheme handles certain financial complaints, and the Council for Medical Schemes handles medical scheme complaints. Take the policy schedule, the rejection letter and the claim documents with you.
How WiT Money compares these products
Products stay in provider name order. A car excess, a funeral benefit, a medical scheme contribution and a pet plan are not sorted against one another. Nothing is ranked as the cheapest. A listed name is not a recommendation, and WiT Money does not sell the policy. Where this site has the provider's logo, it is shown. Otherwise the name is shown without a mark. An FSP number or a scheme registration number is not printed unless the recorded page already states it, and it is not a register check by WiT Money.
Questions readers ask
Does it cover vaccinations?
Only if the policy has a routine-care benefit. Many do not.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Usually not. If the vet has already noted the condition, expect an exclusion.
Is this medical aid for pets?
No. It is a short-term insurance policy with caps. There is no prescribed minimum benefit for animals.
